What is Flat Screen TV?

Flat Screen TV, describes the flat panel TV screens which you have probably seen advertised over recent years. They are the basis of what is now known as a Home Cinema System. They allow you to watch DVD's in full surround sound. Flat Screen TV gives you the full Home Cinema experience. It can be wall mounted and saves you space in your home.

How do I make a home cinema system out of my Flat Screen TV?

To turn your flat screen TV into a full home cinema system you will need some extra equipment. The basis of most Home Cinema Sets is the plasma screen. It provides the image. A sound system is required for the audio. And of course you will need a DVD player or VCR to play DVD and cassettes. To watch regular TV on your Flat Screen TV you will probably require a tuner. Most VCR's have a tuner built in, so connecting a VCR will usually allow you to watch TV.

What should I use? A plasma screen or a projector home cinema set?

A plasma screen will provide the best quality picture in most conditions. However they are pricey. You may consider a home cinema projector as a cheaper alternative. However note that the picture quality on a plasma screen is far superior, and a projector is only partially effective in bright conditions.

Do I need a sound system to turn my Flat Screen TV into a home cinema system?

Yes, in most cases. Most screens will only provide a picture, but no sound. To make your home cinema system complete a sound system will be required. Some Flat Screen TV's have speakers built in. However the quality will be lower than a dedicated sound system.

How do I design a home cinema system to go with my Flat Screen TV?

You will require a sound system, and a DVD player or VCR. A surround sound system is recommended as it gives your Flat Screen TV the full Home Cinema experience.

What is a flat panel TV?

Flat panel TV is another term for Flat Screen TV. Actually all the terms mean very much the same thing. The term Flat Screen TV, Home Cinema, and Flat Panel TV mean pretty much the same.

Is there a cheaper alternative to a Flat TV?

Yes. Projectors, LCD displays, large screen TV's to name a few. In some cases they are better suited, but a plasma screen is far superior in picture quality, and is more universal. If you are unsure as to whether a plasma screen will suit your needs contact us and we can advise.

What are the advantages of a plasma screen over the alternatives?

Picture quality, contrast, richer colours. The picture quality of a plasma screen is astounding! It is one of the major advantages of Flat TV.

Can I use a plasma screen for a home cinema installation?

Yes, it's their most common use! It will need to be coupled to a surround sound system. A conventional stereo could suffice, but a quality surround sound system will give you the full cinema effect. In order to receive terrestrial TV it will have to be connected to a video player as most screens do not have a tuner.

Can I integrate my Flat Screen TV with my sound system and computer?

Yes! We encourage it! That way you get the most out of your system. Your PC, DVD player, video player, stereo, and most other audio or video equipment can be connected. What can a flat screen tv be used for?

Most screens have a variety of inputs, allowing them to be connected to a majority of equipment, such as VCRs, TV tuners, computers, DVD players etc. The most common use is for home cinema where the screen can be connected to a high quality sound system for superior sound and vision. Can a home cinema system be used as a television?

Yes, but not directly. Most plasma screens do not have a tuner which receives TV signals, and do not automatically come with speakers to output the sound. However a conventional video player does! Connect the screen to a video player and a conventional stereo and presto! You have a home cinema!

Explain what the resolutions are?

The resolution is the quality of the picture. In technical terms its the number of pixels per square inch. The higher the resolution the more accurate and sharp the picture. Resolutions from lowest to highest are as follows:
CGA (most TV screens)
EGA
VGA
SVGA (most computer monitors)
XGA (most plasma screens)
SXGA (high quality plasma screens)

What is the aspect ratio?

This is the ratio of the screens width to its height. Simply put, it tells you how wide the screen is. A standard TV has a ratio of 4:3. Wide screen is normally 16:9 and this applies to most plasma screens. There are some other aspect ratios but they are less common.

What is the screen size?

It is the size of the screen measured from opposite corners, diagonally across the screen. Usually measured in inches.
