What is a CD Library system, how does it work, and what features can it provide?
The system allows numerous CDs to be played, mixed, controlled from a single console.
Playlists can be created, or music can be played by category, artist, genre etc.
Old style systems would consist of units, where the CDs were physically held inside.
These are laregly obsolete now, as newer systems which record the music into memory
are faster, take up less space, usually cost less if a significant number of CDs are
held.
A typical system consists of a touch panel for selecting and managing your music, and
a central unit for recording and storing your music. CDs are inserted into the central
unit, which copies them into memory. The CD can then be stored elsewhere. The system
can then automatically download CD information through the internet. This includes a track list, artist
information, graphics, genre etc, and allows for simple CD management.
CD Libraries are often used in conjunction with
multiroom audio
systems, and home automation sytems.
What are the advantages of CD Libraries?
They are a modern method of storing and managing your CDs. The console
allows you to categorize your CDs to play them by genre. Play lists can be compiled, and
there is no need to change the CDs. If you have a large
CD collection you will benefit from a library system.
How many CDs can a system hold?
Most systems will hold on the lines of 4'000 CDs.
Old style "duke box" systems, where the CDs are physically held within
the system will hold upto a couple of hundred CDs each, however numerous units can be
connected together.
Do I need a computer to use the system?
The systems are normally controlled by a touch panel. A Personal Computer can be used, but it not the conventional method of control. Either way, a controller of your choice will
control the hardware for you.
